I happen to also like Vengeance the least out of all the games, not that it's bad just the gameplay is more stressful and requires more micromanaging. In Vengeance there is a package that gives you all the heroes for like $15-17 that I bought but it's not woth it for everyone that plays more casually. Of course there is no need to buy all the heroes just the ones you want. 
Of course on newer games like Vengeance heroes will still cost you around $2-4 on sale because the game is new and there is more incentive for them to keep the prices higher as long as people are buying.
Sales happen a few times during the year with common ones being around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and just before Summer break. For the Original KR and Frontiers I got almost all the heroes for a dollar each on sale which is pretty good for replay value.
However the older the games get the cheaper the heroes are. It costs a lot if you don't buy them on sale.
